Vision
Being made in the image of a relational God, God has hard wired us to live in relationship. God's desire is for the Great Commission (Matthew 28), Christlikeness, and Christian maturity to be worked out in the context of relationships. While this happens in a number of settings, the life-on-life discipleship circle (2-6 gathered) offers a unique opportunity for us to go deeper in relationship, encouragement, and accountability in intentional, same gender relationships. We see this reflected in the New Testament both in Jesus' discipleship strategy as well as relationships such as Paul and Timothy.
Life-on-Life Discipleship Definition
Life-on-life discipleship relationships are intentional relationships (1x1 or small groups) that are focused on growing as lifelong, obedient followers of Jesus who in turn help others to do the same.
What is Our Church Goal for Life-on-Life Discipleship?
-
For every Lifegroup to have a gender specific life-on-life discipleship component
-
For at least 50% of our church to be trained and deployed disciple makers who are actively pursuing spiritually hungry people to disciple.
What Do We Do in Life-on-Life Discipleship Relationships?
Through a blend of relational connection, biblical content, application, and challenge we seek to focus on, grow in, and practicing three main areas:
- Look Up (or Encounter) - Helping people to be with Jesus by cultivating a daily devotional life and learning an abiding day-by-day relationship with Jesus
- Look In (or Disciple) - Helping people become more like Jesus through practicing accountability, confession, repentance, and prayer for one another
- Look Out (or Mission) - Helping people join God's purposes in the world around them through living as salt and light in every sphere of our lives, including discipleship and sharing the gospel.
Types of Life-on-Life Discipleship:
Peer to Peer Discipleship:
Big Idea: Peer to peer discipleship relationships are a primary experience of the Lifegroup
- Peer Groups - Typically facilitated in Lifegroups, these are same gender groups of people in similar stages of life.
- Peer 1x1 Discipleship - Often facilitated in Lifegroups, this is an intentional relationship where both people are in about the same spiritual stage, or where the leader is one or two steps ahead of the other.
Mentorship:
- Mentorship 1x1 Discipleship - This is an intentional relationship where the discipler is significantly farther ahead in one or more areas than the person being discipled.
- Mentorship Groups - This is a group that may meet for a shorter period of time and is typically focused on a growth topic or coaching.
